After having spent a good deal of time watching numerous 3D Blu-ray films on an LG 3D setup for our 3D feature, it was quite refreshing (and surprising) to have a 3D projector sent to us by the boys at Vivitek. What caught us even more off guard was that this projector wasn’t something that needed to be lugged around carefully due to its exorbitant price-tag. No, this D538W-3D projector is a budget little beast that’s set to turn your standard 2D experience to something better.

OUT OF THE BOX
When we first got this guy out of its black casing, we weren’t at all surprised by what we saw. The projector has been designed with the standard creamy white look in mind where the sides curve and the heat vent grates are kept to the front and side panels. Its controls have been kept on the top panel while the lens is made to sit in a slightly protruding spot so as to allow the focus ring to remain outside the body and the zoom ring to stay inside. Whether or not this all-white look will go well with buyers is something to be seen. For us, it was a traditional take on this design, which we’ve come to like.

TECHNOLOGY
This guy is a bright one with 3200 lumens under its hood, which runs the chance of getting pretty hot. This makes those numerous grilles all the more necessary. At the same time, the contrast ratio is 3,000:1 which only goes to say that this projector is fit to render the 3D images it’s been built for.

The 3D is actually upscaling of 2D content because getting true 3D from a projector requires the price tag to be about three times higher. So the 2D to 3D upscaling is done in the standard way, by using active glasses that cover each eye alternatingly at a frequency that matches the frame rate from the projector. Meanwhile, the projector displays alternating images, left eye followed by the right and so on. From what we’ve seen in the past, this type of 3D upscaling is a dizzying experience as your eyes and mind are being tricked continuously, which sooner or later can get exhausting. How Vivitek does it still needed to be seen.

The connectivity options available here are a HDMI port, D-sub PC port, a composite video input, S-Video and a mini-jack audio input (for the little 2W speaker it hides under its hood). At the same time, there aren’t any USB ports that can be used for pen-drives, which would’ve made the professional use of this projector much easier.
